Prisoner Assistance

Role of the Consular Officer Assisting U.S. Citizens in Prisons

A U.S. Consular Officer Can:

  • Make personal visits to prisoners in jail
  • Provide a list of local attorneys
  • Notify family or friends, serve as a communication link and assist in the transfer of private funds to the prisoner
  • Intercede with local authorities to assure that internationally recognized standards of humane treatment are observed
  • Protest any mistreatment or abuse

A U.S. Consular Officer Cannot:

  • Demand or arrange release from incarceration
  • Provide legal representation or advice
  • Pay for legal fees or fines with government funds
