Prisoner Assistance
Role of the Consular Officer Assisting U.S. Citizens in Prisons
A U.S. Consular Officer Can:
- Make personal visits to prisoners in jail
- Provide a list of local attorneys
- Notify family or friends, serve as a communication link and assist in the transfer of private funds to the prisoner
- Intercede with local authorities to assure that internationally recognized standards of humane treatment are observed
- Protest any mistreatment or abuse
A U.S. Consular Officer Cannot:
- Demand or arrange release from incarceration
- Provide legal representation or advice
- Pay for legal fees or fines with government funds
