American Citizen Services

Services Provided by the American Citizen Services Unit

The American Citizen Services Unit assists U.S. citizens with the following:

  • Application for new or renewed passports
  • Registration of citizens living in, traveling to, or born in Guatemala
  • Security information for citizens planning to travel to Guatemala
  • Voter registration
  • Social security and veterans’ benefits
  • Provision of federal income tax forms
  • Notarial service for documents to be used in the United States
  • Certain emergency services, including prisoner protection and documentation of the deceased

What American Citizen Services CANNOT Do:

  • Act as your lawyer, translator, interpreter, personal assistant, travel agent, investigator, law enforcement agent or real estate agent
  • Provide you or your family with physical protection
  • Pay your debts or fines, sort out property disputes; or interfere in judicial proceedings
  • Find you employment, residence, or schools
  • Search for missing luggage
  • Settle disputes with hotel managers and landlords
  • Discuss visa cases. All questions about visas must be directed to the Non-Immigrant Visa (NIV) or Immigrant Visa (IV) Units.
