Statement by the U.S. Embassy Regarding the Attack to the PDH in Guatemala City

Guatemala, August 27, 2003

The United States Embassy condemns in the strongest terms the robbery and vandalism that occurred yesterday in the office of the Human Rights Ombudsman. We understand that this is the first time, in the 16 years the office has existed, that it has suffered this kind of attack. These violations to the integrity of the office are an affront to all Guatemalans who have been served by its work. Actions like these have no place in a civil society. We encourage the government to use all means to investigate the crime and punish those responsible.---
