Statement by the U.S. Embassy Regarding the Presidential Veto (Decree 51-2003)

Guatemala, November 6, 2003

The United States Embassy wishes to commend President Portillo for taking decisive action in vetoing the Election Holiday Law. This statesman-like gesture helps restore public confidence in the electoral process and it avoids possible disruption and confusion.

At the same time, this veto imposes a moral obligation on all employers to take extraordinary steps to ensure all their employees are able to exercise their right to vote.---
