Statement by the U.S. Embassy on Guatemalan Presidential Elections

Guatemala, December 29, 2003

In a process the nation can be proud of, Guatemalans have chosen Oscar Berger and Eduardo Stein to lead the government during the next 4 years. All of the participants in this election have our congratulations, especially the citizens of Guatemala who turned out in historically high numbers in both the first and second rounds.

We would like to specifically congratulate President-elect Berger and we look forward to working with him and his government on the broad range of issues of importance to both our nations. Together, we can strengthen each other and make our world safer, more just and more prosperous.---
