Vivian Huelgo Social Services Director of Sanctuary for Families 

Domestic Violence Expert Shares Experience with Guatemalan Counterparts.  Vivian Huelgo, social services director of Sanctuary for Families, a New York City-based center for abused women and children, participated in a series of conferences, site visits and meetings in Guatemala March 12-14. The visit was part of Embassy Guatemala’s celebration of International Women’s Month.

Sherman Bernard Brings Jazz from New Orleans to IGA.  New Orleans musicians Sherman Bernard and Lance Ellis, joined by Guatemalan musicians Rolando Guidiel ("Jechu") and Fernando Martin, jammed at the Guatemalan American Institute March 9-13 in a visit coordinated by the Embassy's Outreach Coordinator.

Yellow Bird Dancers

Yellow Bird Indian Dance Group Visits Guatemala.  Six members of the Yellow Bird Dance Group, representing Native American tribes from throughout the United States, visited Guatemala June 19-23. More than 2,000 Guatemalans from Quiche, Solola and Guatemala City viewed their colorful costumes, lively dances, inspiring storytelling and moving music during their six performances in Guatemala.


'Shot in the Hand'

"Sacred Legacy: Edward S. Curtis and the North American Indian."  This unique photographic exhibition explores the extraordinary diversity among Native American peoples, their culture and history, the diversity of American society, and the technical and aesthetic achievement of Edward S. Curtis. Two identical exhibitions of sixty museum-quality fine art photographic prints by Curtis will travel broadly throughout the Western Hemisphere in 2005-2008.

'The Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad Program.'

"The Rhythm Road:  American Music Abroad Program."  As part of The U.S. Department of State Jazz Ambassadors Program, The Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad mission is to share American music as a vehicle of communication with other countries. Jazz at Lincoln Center and the U.S. Department of State have collaborated to produce a tour featuring six jazz quartets and two American urban music quartets to represent American music overseas.

'The Hours', New York, 2003

Impressions of New York. José Mayorga, a Guatemalan artist who broke onto the national scene with a work full of poetry and worry in an investigative series of photographs into the human side of the city that never sleeps. This exhibition is the center piece of IGA's September Homage to New York.
