Embassy Sections

Economic Section

The Section has 3 Foreign Service Officers and a local specialist that are in charge of economic affairs and related issues.  The principal assignment of the section is to maintain positive and constructive relations between the United States and Guatemala in the economic area.  The Section submits reports in areas of interest to agencies of the United States Government, responds to questions from these same agencies, and organizes visits to Guatemala by senior officials of the U.S. Executive and Legislative branches.  The Section also provides advice to U.S. businesses that invest in and do business with Guatemala, and acts as a liaison between established organizations.

Economy

  • Explain U.S. policies in various areas - such as trade, finance, investment, and agriculture – to the Government of Guatemala and solicit its support in international fora.
  • Maintain relations with the Guatemalan Executive and Legislative branches to analyze and report on the Guatemalan economy and the government’s national and international economic policies.
  • Coordinate with, and act as liaison to, regional economic organizations.

Environment, Science, Technology, and Health

  • Explain U.S. policies on environmental, scientific, technological, and sanitary themes to the Government of Guatemala and solicit its support in international fora.
  • Maintain relations with the Guatemalan Executive and Legislative branches, and with NGOs, to analyze and report about the above-mentioned themes.
  • Establish bilateral ties with the government and with NGOs and seek assistance for the environmental and sanitary protection sectors in Guatemala.
