U.S. Embassy Statement on the Death of Subcomisario Cándido Alberto Guzmán Calel

Guatemala, July 17, 2006

"We are deeply saddened by the death of Subcomisario Cándido Alberto Guzmán Calel, and offer our condolences to his family and the Policía Nacional Civil, Guatemala's Civil National Police force (PNC). We honor the commitment and sacrifice of Subcomisario Guzmán and his dedication to improve Guatemala as Chief of the Investigation Unit of the Model Precinct Project and Coodinator of the "Cuéntaselo a Waldemar" ("Say it to Waldemar") Program, where he conducted investigations against corruption within the PNC, gangs and organized crime. We appreciate the efforts of brave men and women like him, who continue to help the residents of Villa Nueva take back their community and fight crime."
