U.S. Embassy Statement on the Approval of the CICIG by the Guatemalan Congress

Guatemala, August 1, 2007

"The United States congratulates the Guatemalan Congress for approving yesterday the agreement that will establish the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG).  The Commission’s goals of investigating and assisting in the prosecution by Guatemalan authorities of criminal groups engaged in violence affecting the human rights of Guatemalan citizens will help the Government of Guatemala strengthen the rule of law.  We commend the people and Government of Guatemala for undertaking this ground-breaking and promising initiative and continue to seek ways to support CICIG."
