U.S. Embassy Statement on the Decision to Extradite Several Individuals Who are Wanted in the United States on Serious Criminal Charges

The Government of the United States welcomes President Colom’s and the Government of Guatemala’s decision to further justice and security by upholding judicial orders to extradite several individuals who are wanted in the United States on serious criminal charges. The President’s courageous action underscores his administration’s demonstrated support for the rule of law and the undeniable progress Guatemala has made in combating organized crime and corruption. “Guatemalan authorities have sent an unequivocal message that no one is above the law. The U.S. Government reiterates its steadfast commitment to the people of Guatemala, their democratically-elected leaders, judicial and law enforcement officials, and the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala in promoting and strengthening the rule of law. We look forward to continuing our cooperation with the government-elect in the fight against impunity,” said the Ambassador of the United States in Guatemala Arnold Chacon.
