Guatemalans “Second Line” to New Orleans Musical Gumbo Beat.

New Orleans musicians Sherman Bernard and Lance Ellis, joined by Guatemalan musicians Rolando Guidiel ("Jechu") and Fernando Martin, jammed at the Guatemalan American Institute March 9-13 in a visit coordinated by the Embassy's Outreach Coordinator. The highlight of their visit was a rousing New Orleans music "gumbo" concert that brought the Guatemalan audience repeatedly to their feet and included “second line” Mardi Gras dancing snaking through the theatre.

The musicians also conducted two well-attended New Orleans music workshops for local music students and one for professionals, and they integrated the students in their concert. Bernard and Ellis also participated in jam sessions at one of Guatemala City’s major hotels and a local jazz club, including with one of the members of the Buena Vista Social Club, who now lives and plays weekly in Antigua.
