U.S. Government Donates 100,000 Voter Brochures in Support of the Guatemalan Electoral Process
Educational brochure on citizenry and civic issues entitled “Guatemala, El poder de tu decisión” (“Guatemala, the Power of your Decision”)
Guatemala, August 16, 2007
The U.S. Government, in a joint effort with the European Union, today donated brochures on civic issues to Guatemala’s 2007 General Elections Partnership Commission, which is composed of representatives from San Carlos University, the Human Rights Office and the Office of the Guatemalan Archbishop. The Commission was responsible for the design and content of the brochure. The U.S. contribution consisted in the reproduction of 100,000 copies.
The PAO represented the U.S.
Embassy, and representatives from the U.S. Agency for International
Development (USAID) and the EU’s Democratic Municipalities Program
joined in the presentation of brochures. The brochure aims to
inform Guatemalan youth about political institutions that participate
in the electoral process, so that they themselves can form their own
opinions and vote conscientiously when casting ballots that will help
to determine Guatemala’s future. The brochure also provides citizens
with information about factors involved in the political
decision-making process at the local, city, departmental and national
levels. The U.S. Government, through the U.S. State Department
and USAID, support the Commission’s efforts to build confidence and
foster credibility in the electoral process while guaranteeing the
rights of the Guatemalan people by promoting citizen participation.
