Visit of Perry Holloway, Director of the Narcotics Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Bogota, Colombia

Guatemala, February 19, 2009

Perry Holloway, Director of the Narcotics Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Bogota, Colombia, held a press conference on February 19 in Guatemala City. He was accompanied by Omar Adolfo Figueroa Reyes, the Deputy Director of Assets for the Colombian National Narcotics Directorate. The two shared their experiences in the fight against narcotrafficking in Colombia. Holloway and Figueroa pointed out that Colombian successes are due to the commitment and coordination at the local, bilateral, and international level to work together against narcotrafficking.

Mr. Holloway, who also spent three years as Director of the Narcotics Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala, discussed the reality of Colombian narcotrafficking and how it is countered on land, sea, and air. He noted the firm commitment of the Colombian government to eradicate narcotrafficking and spoke of the strong judicial and legal structures in place to combat it.

Mr. Figueroa stated that one of the most important legal advances in the fight against narcotrafficking in Colombia is the implementation of the Seized Assets law, which allows authorities to decomission goods owned by, used by, or destined for narcotraffickers and terrorists. The goods can then be legally used by authorities to further operations against the narcotraffickers themselves.
