Thomas Shannon, Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Visits Guatemala
Guatemala, March 20, 2009
Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Thomas Shannon, Jr., visited Guatemala Thursday, March 19 through Saturday, March 21, 2009.
Prior to his arrival in Guatemala, Assistant Secretary Shannon visited El Salvador and Honduras.
This was his first visit to Guatemala since President Obama took office in January this year.

During this stay, Assistant Secretary Shannon met with Guatemalan officials to underline the U.S. commitment to working with our Latin American neighbors on a variety of issues of importance to the region.
The U.S. Assistant Secretary paid a call on Guatemalan President Alvaro Colom in the President’s office.
During his trip to Central America, Assistant Secretary Thomas Shannon held a press conference on March 20. The U.S. Ambassador to Guatemala, Stephen McFarland also attended.
