Ambassador McFarland Makes Donation for Cultural Preservation in Guatemala
Guatemala, September 10, 2008
Under the “Ambassador’s Fund” program, the U.S. Ambassador to Guatemala, Stephen G. McFarland, made a donation for the preservation of Guatemala’s Cultural Patrimony to the Federation for the Preservation of Natural Resources and Environment in Guatemala (FCG) represented by its president Luis Móvil, and the Minister of Culture Jerónimo Lancerio, during ceremony held at the National Palace of Culture. This donation of $575,251 will be shared by two projects: San Bartolo and Naranjo, in Petén.

The donation under the Ambassador’s Fund will be distributed in a two year period, to support the preservation and documentation of Mayan culture in the Peten region. Approximately $353,000 will be given to the Naranjo Site in the Yaxhá-Nakum-Naranjo Park for the preservation of the temple’s hieroglyphic staircase and to document the plundering of cultural artifacts. In addition, $222,000 will be used in the conservation of late pre-classic murals at San Bartolo. The work in Naranjo is being administered by the Project of Archaeological Investigation and Rescue of Naranjo (PIAREN), under the direction of the Archaeologist Vilma Fialko. The work in San Bartolo is being done by the Regional Archeological Project San Bartolo, under the direction of Dr. William Saturno and the Archeologist Mónica Urquizú.
